Saint Poet Madsudhan Razdan

Kashmir the abode of Shiva and Shakti has given birth to many saints, seers, sofis and poets. In the field of literature, especially in spiritual poetry, we have seen works of Lelded, Nund Reshi, Permanand Krishan Joo Razdan, Shamas Faqir etc who maintained high values of humanity among general masses through their poetry. These were the real torch bearers of the society and gained reputation by words and deeds. Among this galaxy of knowledge and piety we have a famous saint poet Swami Madsudhan Razdan of Srinagar- Kashmir who lived from 1912 AD to 1969 AD. Swami Ji being a mystic poet composed poems in vachun form generally and expressed his experiences of spiritual life and understanding in lyrical style. Though his poetry collection was not published earlier as most of his works were destroyed due to turmoil and exodus from the valley. The remaining saved writings have been collected/composed in the shape of a book named as “Madhuriya Gira” meaning sweet voice. The same has been released on 23rd April’2002. The Book has been appreciated by Kashmiri scholars and men of letters.

After studying his poetry, it is observed that swami Jee preached universal brotherhood, non-violence, love for all, peaceful co-existence and human values along with the devotional path of life. These are the values which mostly the Kashmiri Saint Poets have put in their poetical versions. The life of Swami Jee was a symbol of sacrifice, devotion and selfless service for mankind. Like all other poets of Kashmir, he was apostle of Sufi and saint culture with reverence to all deities’ viz., Shiva and Shakti, Krishna, Ram, Ganpati and surya. This conclusion comes into light by studying his poem “Hay Chandrasekhar Kor Ma Cha Soot Az Vaach Bandhan” means O Chandrasekhar, Lord Shiva I have tied myself with you today by surrendering unto thyself. Or “By concentrating one’s mind unto thee, the sources of his being can be found by a devotee.

Born in 1912 AD at Nai-Sarak, Srinagar-Kashmir, Swami Madsudhan Razdan passed matriculation in 1934 AD and was appointed in Ordnance Deptt. Observing him as averse to the world, he was married to Smt. Shobavati of Ganpatyar, but who could stop the hight and might of the almighty, Smt Shobavati passed away only after five years of her marriage. Later on he left his job and went to Bandipora (Kashmir) to meditate in the jungles of Chiternaar.By persuasions of one of his friends Sh.Ved Lal Kaul of Kalusa, Bandipora, he agreed to come down from the hills of Chiternaar and stay in a temple known as Shaardabal Mandir at Kalusa, Bandipora. Thereafter he spent his life in religious places and practiced Yoga. He adopted poetry as medium to profess and propagate his experiences about the mortal world. He wrote his poetry in five volumes and himself named his writings as “Madhurya Gira”.Most of his works got gutted due to the turmoil and exodus from the valley. However a part of it could be saved and published in the shape of a book released on 23-04-2002. He left his mortal body on 14th November 1969 Kartic Shukla Paksh Shishti after spending 57 years of precious life in the valley of piety and poetry.
